That tight, irritated feeling in your throat is a really common and uncomfortable part of EoE. The good news is there are some things that may help ease it.
Here are some simple things to try at home:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day — staying hydrated can help soothe throat inflammation
- Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day — mix about half a teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm water, gargle, and spit it out (don't swallow it)
- Avoid cigarette smoke, which can make throat irritation worse If you take any over-the-counter pain relievers for the discomfort, always take them with plenty of water. Some medications can scratch or irritate the lining of the esophagus if not taken with enough fluid — something to be extra mindful of with EoE. If the tightness and irritation persist or feel severe, it's worth reaching out to your doctor. It could be a sign that inflammation needs to be better managed, and there are prescription treatment options — including biologics and steroids — that your doctor can discuss with you. Keeping inflammation under control is really key to preventing further complications like scarring or narrowing of the esophagus.
